You know that show, “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” This is a 5th grade math problem that kept me and genese scratching our heads for about 20 minutes. We eventually had it solved, but used totally different approaches to find the same solution.

  • There are 7 girls on a bus.
  • Each girl has 7 backpacks.
  • In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
  • For every big cat there are 7 little cats.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

If you think you know the answer, download this excel spreadsheet and enter in the answer as the password. If it opens, you know you are smarter than a 5th grader.

Fifty six cats shoved into each of 49 backpacks!!! And we’re worrying about the number of legs?? Shouldn’t we be teaching our kids to worry about, say, animal cruelty laws?
