I thought you would keep me warm when I purchased you,
I thought maybe the blown in insulation would keep me warm, but maybe it was just me that was mistaken.
Thankfully you have a wood stove,
which allows me to burn the wood in the wood shed the previous owner left behind.
Thank you previous owner.

Some things I learned while renovating our home.

1. Be prepared to not get anything done that you want done for the day.

2. Be prepared to find nasty crap in the walls, floors, ceilings, and plot of land your home sits on.

3. Be prepared to take 4 hours on a project that should only take about 1 hour.

4. Be prepared to buy lots of things you think you need to get such as doors, and tools, only to return them to the store later.

5. Rushing to complete a project is like dooming yourself to torture in the near future.

6. Things will never look the same once youve done the work yourself. You notice the smallest imperfection in the same work all around you in restaurants, homes, and hotels (ig, tiling).

7. DO your homework before believing what others say you should do.

8. Eat at regularly scheduled times during the project.

9. A truck is very useful. So is a shop vac.

10. Dont be cheap (ironic…), itll end up costing you more in the long run. This is especially true for tools.

There are 7 girls on a bus.

Each girl has 7 backpacks.

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.

For every big cat there are 7 little cats.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

If you think you know the answer, download this excel spreadsheet and enter in the answer as the password. If it opens, you know you are smarter than a 5th grader.

Happy New Year!

BTW, AIM is much smarter than I thought. It automatically opens up ports on your firewall in order to connect to another person using AIM. However, this can be problematic if your router doesnt quite handle it well enough. Two days ago I was able to connect with video im to another person, but just yesterday, I noticed the open video option unavailable. In fact, it was totally missing from AIM.

After uninstalling/reinstalling AIM, drivers, etc. I decided to check my firewall. It turned out that the ports aim was using were not released properly and the AIM software upon start recognized that the ports were unavailable and thus disabled the feature. Neat actually. So I rebooted the router and restarted AIM and the option to use video im returned. Who knew AIM was firewall aware.

Housing is expensive in the bay area…Nationwide, housing has dropped %16, but in san francisco, its only dropped %2. So what does that mean? Maybe we gotta pay these nasty house prices even though the market is crap right now. Genese and I have just begun our search for a home, as this blip of a window of an opportunity may be too good to pass up. Just recently, we went down to LA and looked at some condos selling for $640,000. The same condo now is down to $450,000.

Weve gotten a quick preapproval for a home loan, and were gonna look around the South San Francisco area for pre-foreclosures…Hopefully with these pre-foreclosures, we will get about 20%-40% off the market value for the house, and were looking for something in the range of $500k-$600k. But we will see. Wish us luck!

So yeah, I guess ive slowly come to realize that im officially an adult. I still dont feel like it, act like it, or really like it, but then again I guess it depends on your personal perspective on what constitutes an adult. Anyways, I guess as an adult one takes care of their finances. So yeah, ive been looking at money and investing and find that its not quite as difficult as I thought it would be. For those of you who havent done your taxes, click here for a free copy of Taxcut Premium and Deduction Pro (make sure you uncheck the “extended download protection” to make it free).

As well, if you have ING Direct, you may also open a traditional IRA to maximize the deductions on your taxes…currently you can add up to $4,000 if youre young enough…However, if you have a retirement plan sponsored by your employer, your tax deductions may actually be minimized. In that case, if you fall within the right income bracket, you should probably just open up a Roth IRA instead. Also, if you use ING to open an IRA, they have no-load or commission-free mutual funds to put your IRA to good use. I think I have to open mine tonight…

I cut my hand today.

Our light bulb burnt out the other day, and it got me curious…why do light bulbs burn out anyway!?

“There are a number of sites that describe in detail how a bulb works. HowStuffWorks and How Things Work both do a thorough job of explaining the physics of this watershed invention.

To summarize: electrical current flows through the bulb’s filament, a long, super thin, double coil wire made of the metal tungsten. This interaction creates extreme heat around 4,000 degrees and starts a process that causes the atoms to release extra energy in the form of light photons.

At such a high temperature, though, some tungsten atoms will fly off and collect on the inside of the bulb’s glass. This loss of tungsten is slowed but not prevented by adding inert gases, typically argon. The argon atoms rebuff the tungsten atoms when they collide, so that some tungsten atoms rebound and rejoin the solid filament. But eventually, as more and more atoms are lost, the filament starts to disintegrate.

The filament is further compromised by the rapid heating and cooling of the wire when the bulb is turned on and off. This creates areas of stress almost like in a paper clip that’s repeatedly bent. Eventually, this stress, coupled with the loss of tungsten atoms, weakens the filament enough to break. And that’s when it’s time to fork over another couple of bucks to GE.”
